Keshi pearls are small non-nucleated pearls typically formed as by-products of pearl cultivation. When a technician nucleates the pearl-bearing mollusc a piece of shell or grit enters the mollusc at the same time as mother of pearl bead in being implanted. This irritation causes the nacre to be formed around foreign  object  creating the pearl. As a result the Keshi pearls are all nacre. They are baroque in shape and generally have a beguiling lustre.

A Japanese word also meaning 'poppy' it is used in Japan for all pearls that grow without a nucleus.
